About This Tool
A multi-mode discount calculator for shoppers and retailers. Find the final sale price from an original price and a discount (percentage or fixed amount), or reverse-engineer the original price from a discounted price. Optionally add sales tax (VAT/GST) to the final amount.
In forward mode, a R200 item at 25% off costs R150 and saves R50. In reverse mode, if you paid R80 after a 20% discount, the original price was R100.
**How Discount Math Works**
Percentage discount: Final = Original × (1 − % ÷ 100). Fixed discount: Final = Original − Amount. Reverse: Original = Final ÷ (1 − % ÷ 100). The effective percentage is always relative to the original price. Useful for sale shopping, comparing deals, and verifying advertised savings. All calculations run in your browser.

- How do I calculate a discount?
- For a percentage discount, multiply the original price by (1 − discount% ÷ 100). R200 at 25% off = 200 × 0.75 = R150, saving R50.
- How do I find the original price from a discounted price?
- Divide the discounted price by (1 − discount% ÷ 100). R80 after 20% off: 80 ÷ 0.80 = R100.
- Fixed vs percentage discount?
- A percentage scales with price (20% off R200 = R40). A fixed amount is flat (R25 off any price), so its effective % changes with the price.
- Does this include tax?
