**Understanding Tipping Customs**

Tipping customs vary dramatically around the world, and understanding the norms for your location helps you tip appropriately without over- or under-paying. In the United States, tipping at sit-down restaurants is effectively mandatory, with 15–20% being the standard range. Many restaurants automatically add an 18% gratuity for parties of 6 or more. Tipping less than 15% in the US is generally considered rude and implies poor service.

In South Africa, tipping is customary but not as deeply ingrained as in the US. A 10–15% tip is standard for restaurant service, with 10% being acceptable for average service and 15–20% for exceptional service. Some restaurants in tourist areas may add an automatic gratuity, so check your bill before adding an extra tip.

In many European countries, a service charge is often included in the bill. In the UK, a 10–12.5% service charge is commonly added automatically. In Australia and New Zealand, tipping is not expected, though it is appreciated for exceptional service. In Japan, tipping is generally not practiced and can even be considered rude.

**How the Tip Calculator Works**

The calculation is straightforward: Tip Amount = Bill Total × (Tip Percentage ÷ 100). Total = Bill Total + Tip Amount. Per Person = Total ÷ Number of People. For example, a R850 bill with a 15% tip split between 4 people: Tip = R850 × 0.15 = R127.50. Total = R977.50. Per person = R244.38.

**Real-World Scenarios**

A group of 6 colleagues in Johannesburg has a business lunch totalling R2,400. They want to tip 15% and split evenly. Tip: R360. Total: R2,760. Per person: R460.

A couple dining in Cape Town has a bill of R680. One person wants to tip 18%, the other prefers 15%. They compromise at 17%: Tip = R115.60. Total = R795.60. Per person = R397.80.

A family of 4 on holiday in Durban has a R1,200 dinner bill. The restaurant adds a 10% service charge (R120), but the family wants to tip an additional 5% on the pre-charge amount: Additional tip = R60. Total with both charges = R1,380. Per person = R345.

**Tips for Tipping Etiquette**

Always check if a service charge has already been added to your bill before tipping — you do not want to double-tip. For large groups, consider whether an automatic gratuity applies. When splitting the bill, the tip should be calculated on the total bill, not individually on each item (unless each person is paying separately). Round up the per-person amount to avoid awkward cent amounts — for example, if the split is R244.38 each, round to R245 and add the small difference to the tip.

Frequently Asked Questions
What is the standard tip percentage?
In the US, 15-20% is standard for sit-down restaurants. 18% is common for larger groups. Tip customs vary by country and service type.
How is the per-person amount calculated?
Per person = (Bill amount + Tip amount) ÷ Number of people. The calculator rounds to two decimal places.
Can I enter a custom tip percentage?
Yes. Click the Custom button and enter any percentage. You can also use the preset buttons for common tip amounts.
Is my data sent to a server?
No. All calculations happen entirely in your browser. Nothing is transmitted anywhere.
What is the tipping etiquette in South Africa?
In South Africa, a 10–15% tip is standard for restaurant service. 10% for average service, 15–20% for exceptional service. Always check whether a service charge has already been added to your bill before tipping.
Should I tip on the pre-tax or post-tax amount?
Tipping on the pre-tax amount is technically correct, but many people tip on the total including tax for simplicity. The difference is small — on a R500 bill with 15% VAT (R575 total), tipping 15% on the pre-tax amount gives R75 vs R86.25 on the total. Either approach is acceptable.
