About This Tool
The Writing Tracker is a dedicated tool for writers who want to build a consistent daily writing habit. Whether you are working on a novel, maintaining a blog, completing academic papers, drafting business proposals, or writing journal entries, this tracker provides the metrics and visual feedback you need to stay accountable to your writing goals.
Setting up the tracker takes seconds. Enter your daily word count goal — whether it is 250 words for a gentle warm-up, 500 words for a steady blog routine, 1,667 words for a NaNoWriMo pace, or a custom target that suits your project — and the tracker becomes your daily writing companion. Each day, you either paste your writing into the tool to automatically count words, or manually enter a word count if you wrote in another application.
The word counter uses a simple and reliable algorithm: text is split on whitespace boundaries, and empty strings are filtered out. This method produces consistent results that align with the word counts used by most word processors and publishing platforms. The actual text you paste is never stored — only the numerical word count for that day is saved, ensuring your drafts and ideas remain private.
Once you start logging daily counts, the tracker reveals your writing patterns through several metrics. Your current streak shows how many consecutive days you have met or exceeded your goal. The longest streak records your all-time best, giving you a personal record to beat. Total words written provides a cumulative measure of your output, while the daily average reveals your typical writing volume. Together, these metrics create a comprehensive picture of your writing productivity.
The calendar heatmap provides a visual overview of your writing activity. Similar to a GitHub contribution graph, each day is represented by a colored cell. Days where you met or exceeded your goal appear in vibrant green, partial days in lighter shades, and missed days in gray. Seeing a growing cluster of green cells is a powerful motivator to keep writing, while gaps make it immediately clear when you have been slipping.
What happens if you miss a day? Your current streak resets to zero — but that is not a punishment, it is a signal. The longest streak and total word count are preserved, so your historical achievements are never lost. The streak reset is simply an honest reflection that consistency was broken, encouraging you to start a new streak immediately.
All data is stored locally in your browser. No writing content, word counts, or goals are transmitted to any server. The tool works without an internet connection once loaded, making it reliable even when you are writing in offline environments. Export functionality is available for backing up your tracking data.

Frequently Asked Questions
- How is the word count calculated?
- Words are counted by splitting text on whitespace boundaries and filtering out empty strings. This produces consistent results aligned with most word processors and publishing platforms.
- Is my writing saved?
- Only your daily word counts and goal are saved in browser localStorage. The actual text you paste is never stored — it is only used temporarily to count words and then discarded immediately.
- What happens if I miss a day?
- Your current streak resets to zero, but your total words and historical data are preserved. The longest streak is never reset. You can see your full history in the heatmap and start building a new streak immediately.
- Can I set different goals for different projects?
- The tracker currently supports a single daily word count goal. If you work on multiple projects, you can log the combined total or adjust the goal as you switch between projects.
- Is this useful for NaNoWriMo?
- Absolutely. Set your daily goal to 1,667 words (50,000 divided by 30 days) and use the tracker throughout November. The streak and heatmap provide exactly the motivational feedback that makes NaNoWriMo participants successful.
- Can I manually enter a word count?
- Yes. If you wrote in another application, simply type or paste the word count directly. This is useful when drafting in Google Docs, Microsoft Word, or a code editor.
- How long is my data retained?
- Your data persists in localStorage indefinitely until you manually clear your browser data. There is no automatic expiration. You can export your data as a backup at any time.
